Since yesterday, some ten young ADDS recruits as facilitators and supervisors of solid waste management projects are meeting in the meeting room of the Djibouti Social Development Agency (ADDS) where they have started training Of 5 days on the techniques of information and sensitization of the population.
As part of its mission to reduce urban poverty and improve the welfare of the population, the Djibouti Social Development Agency (ADDS) has been organizing a training workshop on information and Awareness of the population around the development projects of the districts of Balbala. About ten young facilitators and supervisors of solid waste management projects take part in this training given by Mr. Thierry Martin, director of the international department of Cabinet Naldeo, specializing in engineering, « Eau Environnement Energie » project management study.
Returning to the solid waste management project, the project receives funding from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). It aims to improve the health, environmental and socio-economic situation of the population of Djibouti-ville. The project is subdivided into three main components.
Firstly, a first component dedicated to infrastructure will see the construction of two large-capacity garages (car park, one in Boulaos and one in Balbala) and the construction of eight (8) waste collection points In Balbala in order to put an end to the wild dump in these districts of Balbala. Secondly, a social engineering component which includes information, awareness-raising and restructuring of informal pre-collectors working in areas not accessible by trucks collecting waste. Finally, a final institutional component reserved for the Djibouti Roads Authority and the technical partners of the project.
Yesterday, ADDS Director of Social Development Dirieh Farah Souldan launched the workshop. In a word he said on this occasion, he first expressed his sincere thanks to the AFD for the financial support before emphasizing the interest of the project of management of solid waste in urban environment . In this respect, he reaffirmed ADDS’s commitment to make every effort to improve the quality of life and public hygiene for Djiboutians. He took the opportunity to encourage young recruits to do their best to achieve the goals set for them.
More generally, the project is part of efforts to reduce urban poverty. It aims in general to bring about significant improvements in the living environment of the local population and to reduce relative and extreme poverty. More specifically, the sound management of solid waste is intended to encourage the creation of formal and sustainable jobs in the solid waste management sector.
Many activities are on the agenda of the project. These include collection points for the collection of waste put into service, the rehabilitation of the equipment park in Ward 7 and the construction of the Sheikh Ousmane Material Park, the establishment of a partnership with the The implementation of the OVD’s institutional and operational optimization recommendations, the implementation of an OVD capacity building plan and the improvement of the sorting and Recycling with the key to job creation.
Good solid waste management offers many benefits and positive health effects. Effects resulting from the pollution avoided from soil, groundwater and air, but also from the pollution avoided due to the waste dumping and incineration and uncontrolled … etc. These benefits are reflected in a lower prevalence of pathologies such as malaria and even prenatal pathologies linked to toxic compounds from waste burning.
The work of the workshop will continue until February 26 to allow young project facilitators and supervisors to take ownership of all the intricacies of solid waste management in urban areas.
