Poverty measures – Building a shared vision

To both learners and trainers gathered last Saturday at Hotel Acacias, the Planning Commissioner , Amareh Ali Said, has highlighted the under- exploitation of many bases of survey data available as essential qu’informations likely explain the interactions between the determinants and characteristics of different socio-economic issues such as poverty and its implications in terms of exclusion , vulnerability, food and economic insecurity .

From 19 February to 1 March, the conference room of the hotel Acacias hosted a training on capacity building of national staff on measurement tools and analysis of poverty.

These meetings , which are closed on Saturday , were jointly organized by the Department of Planning Commission and the leadership of Statistics and Demographic Studies ( DISED ) on the one hand and on the other hand, the State Secretariat for National Solidarity and the Djibouti social Development Agency (ADDS ) .

The closing ceremony of the workshop was attended by Commissioner for Planning, Amareh Said Ali, the director of the DISED Idriss Ali Sultan , Director of the monitoring and evaluation of the ADDS , Chafika Ahmed Abdallah.

The event was the culmination of an eight-day training which was attended by twenty officials from various departments and researchers from the University of Djibouti .

The studious retreat in the gold of the hotel Acacias addressed the need to familiarize national frameworks with technical depth analysis bases survey data on socio-economic and demographic characteristics of households.

To both learners and trainers, the Planning Commissioner stressed that many databases available surveys are not yet used to the best of their potential as essential qu’informations might explain the interactions between the various determinants and characteristics of socioeconomic issues such as poverty and its implications in terms of exclusion , vulnerability, food and economic insecurity .

Mr. Ali Said Amareh also raised expectations of his department vis-à -vis government decision makers .

Which will be involved effectively in the thematic analysis of the results of exploratory surveys of poverty.

Clearly, the principal shall be obliged to assist the Planning Commission in carrying out such an exercise to sharpen the profile of poverty in Djibouti.

Also returns a sequence logic timeliness of this training is part of the national initiative for social development or INDS , launched in January 2007 , to curb extreme poverty.

As the phenomenon affecting large sections of the Djiboutian population , especially in urban areas. Thus, a program co-financed by four donors , was established in order to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged backgrounds.

The proposed support includes a component of continuous training tools thorough analysis of poverty technicians DISED and ADDS.

It will allow the government to have in key sectors , executives with a shared vision of poverty, its causes, its consequences, its manifestations and its measurement and analysis instruments.

At the end of the closing ceremony of the training, participants were awarded certificates .
